What the Word Counter measures
This Word Counter analyses your text as you type and reports five live figures: the number of words, the total characters, the number of sentences, the number of paragraphs, and an estimated reading time. Every figure is calculated in your browser, so even very long documents stay private and update instantly.
How reading time is estimated
Reading time assumes an average adult reading speed of 200 words per minute, a common benchmark for silent reading of general prose. The estimate is rounded up to the next whole minute, so a 150-word note still shows as one minute. Use it as a quick guide for blog posts, speeches and study notes.

Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Any run of non-space characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks counts as one word, so a hyphenated term counts as a single word.
Do the characters include spaces?
Yes. The character total counts spaces, punctuation and line breaks. Use the Character Counter if you also need a spaces-excluded figure.
Is there a word limit?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser, so you can paste essays, articles or whole chapters with no server limit.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. Nothing you type is uploaded or saved. Close the tab and the text is gone.
