What is IDV?

Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the maximum amount your motor insurer pays if your vehicle is stolen or written off. It is based on the manufacturer's listed price less depreciation for the vehicle's age, and it also influences your premium.

How this estimate works

IDV = Ex-showroom price Γ— (1 βˆ’ Depreciation). It is an estimate; insurers may adjust for accessories, registration and vehicles over 5 years old.

Frequently asked questions

Why does IDV fall with age?

A vehicle loses value over time, so insurers apply standard depreciation slabs. The older the vehicle, the higher the depreciation and the lower the IDV.

Should I pick a higher or lower IDV?

A higher IDV means a larger payout on total loss but a higher premium; a lower IDV reduces premium but pays less. Choose a value close to the vehicle market price.

Is IDV based on ex-showroom or on-road price?

IDV is based on the manufacturer listed (ex-showroom) price less depreciation. It excludes registration and insurance costs that make up the on-road price.
