What is an SWP?
A Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) lets you draw a fixed amount from an invested corpus every month while the balance that remains keeps earning returns. It is a popular way to create a regular income stream in retirement without selling your entire investment at once.
How this SWP calculator works
Starting from your corpus, the calculator grows the balance by one month's return, subtracts your withdrawal, and repeats for the whole period. It shows the balance left at the end, the total you withdrew, and β if the money runs out β how many months the corpus actually lasted.
How to use the SWP Calculator
- Enter your corpus. Type the lump sum you are starting with.
- Set the monthly withdrawal. Enter the fixed amount you want to take out each month.
- Add the expected return. Use the annual return you expect the remaining balance to earn.
- Choose the duration. Enter how many years you plan to withdraw for, then read the result.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if my corpus runs out?
The calculator tells you the exact number of months the corpus lasted before the balance reached zero.
Can the balance grow instead of shrink?
Yes. If your return is higher than your withdrawal rate, the closing balance can be larger than the amount you started with.
Is the withdrawal taken before or after growth?
This tool applies one month of growth first and then subtracts the withdrawal, month by month.
Does it account for tax?
No. Figures are pre-tax; actual SWP redemptions may attract capital-gains tax.
