What is the NPS?
The National Pension System (NPS) is a voluntary retirement-savings scheme regulated by the PFRDA. You contribute regularly during your working years, the corpus grows in market-linked funds, and at retirement you take part of it as a lump sum and use the rest to buy an annuity that pays a monthly pension.
How this NPS calculator works
The calculator grows your monthly contributions to retirement using the future-value formula, then splits the corpus into the lump sum you can withdraw and the portion used to buy an annuity. From the annuity portion and the annuity rate it estimates your monthly pension.
How to use the NPS Calculator
- Enter your monthly contribution. Type how much you will invest in the NPS each month.
- Set your ages. Enter your current age and the retirement age, usually 60.
- Add the expected returns. Use an expected return during accumulation and an annuity rate for after retirement.
- Choose the annuity share. Set the percentage of the corpus used to buy an annuity, then read the result.
Frequently asked questions
How much of the corpus must go to an annuity?
At least 40% of the NPS corpus must be used to buy an annuity at retirement; the rest can be withdrawn.
Is the pension amount guaranteed?
No. Both the corpus and the pension depend on market returns and the annuity rate available at retirement.
What returns should I assume?
A long-term return of around 9-10% during accumulation and a 5-6% annuity rate are common assumptions.
Is my data stored?
No. Every figure is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
