What is ideal body weight?
Ideal Body Weight (IBW) formulas estimate a healthy weight from height and sex. They were originally developed for medication dosing but are widely used as a rough target. This tool shows three well-known equations β Devine, Robinson and Miller β plus the overall range they suggest.
Why a range?
No single number fits everyone. Muscle mass, frame size and body composition all matter, so a range is more realistic than one figure. Use it as a guide alongside measures like BMI and body fat.
Note: These estimates are general information, not medical advice. Speak to a qualified professional about a weight goal that is right for you.
How to use the Ideal Weight Calculator
- Enter your height. Type your height in centimetres.
- Select your sex. The formulas use slightly different constants for men and women.
- Read the range. See the suggested ideal weight range across the three formulas.
- Compare formulas. Review the individual Devine, Robinson and Miller estimates.
Frequently asked questions
Which formula is best?
None is definitive. Devine is the classic clinical standard, while Robinson and Miller are refinements. Showing all three gives a realistic range.
Do these account for muscle?
No. Like BMI, they are height-based and do not measure body composition, so very muscular people may sit above the range while still being healthy.
Are they valid for very short or tall people?
They are least accurate at extremes of height because they are based on measurements near an average range.
Is my data stored?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
