What is goal-based investing?
Goal-based investing starts from a target — a house down payment, a child's education, a dream trip — and works backward to the monthly investment needed to reach it. Instead of investing blindly, you save with a clear number and deadline in mind.
How this goal planner works
Enter the amount you want to accumulate, the time you have and the return you expect. The planner uses the future-value-of-an-annuity formula in reverse to calculate the fixed monthly SIP required to hit your goal, along with the total you will invest along the way.
How to use the Goal Planner
- Enter your target amount. Type the corpus you want to accumulate.
- Set the time frame. Enter how many years you have to reach the goal.
- Add the expected return. Use a realistic annual return for your chosen investment.
- Read your monthly SIP. See the fixed monthly investment and total invested needed to get there.
Frequently asked questions
What return should I assume?
For equity mutual funds a long-term 10-12% is common; use a lower rate for safer, debt-based goals.
What if I cannot invest that much?
Extend the time frame or aim for a slightly lower target — both reduce the required monthly investment.
Does a higher return reduce my SIP?
Yes, but higher returns come with higher risk, so balance the assumption against your comfort level.
Is my goal data stored?
No. Everything is calculated locally in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
